5 minutes

Ok…so I have failed MISERABLY in writing 2 blog posts per week…noted.  However, I learned something in my Arabic class from my brilliant teacher Nooshi Saberi.

Going into the class she told me that the most important thing in learning Arabic was consistency…it didn’t matter how much you studied every day, just that it needed to be consistent.  I was telling her that when I traveled I was totally failing to keep up with my studies and then felt terrible when we’d video-conference for my weekly lesson because I hadn’t actually learned anything even though I’d done a remarkable job at forgetting just about everything I had learned the previous week.

What I noticed was that I felt that unless I spent half an hour to an hour on the stuff I ‘d be wasting my time and wasn’t taking it seriously, but that because in tight-time times I rarely had an entire hour to devote to one of the most difficult languages on the planet that I’d end up doing NOTHING.  Guilt and remorse were just so much more readily accessible than a weak attempt.  And she gave me her answer….5 minutes.  That’s all.   Just put 5 minutes into it every day…it doesn’t have to be big or grand…you don’t have to finish a lesson or an alphabet or learn all the words that start in that funky guttural a-like thing they call a letter.  Just 5 minutes.

So I realized that its the same thing with my blog.  I try to write a magnum opus every time I pull this thing up.  So, notwithstanding the fact that a magnum opus is a chimera and that I wouldn’t produce one even if I DID have the luxury of time, I’ve decided to learn from this and write…just 5 mintues! (ok maybe 10)
